How Can AI Create More Jobs Than It Replaces?

A [hopefully] simple explanation of a complex idea.

Introduction

AI is rapidly reshaping how work gets done. It drafts documents, analyzes data, writes code, creates images, and handles routine tasks that once took entire teams.

Yet several major studies, including the World Economic Forum’s 2025 Future of Jobs Report, estimate that AI and other emerging technologies will create more jobs than they replace – roughly 170M added and 92M lost for a net gain of 78 million jobs by 2030.

But if AI is automating so much, how can it possibly create more jobs than it destroys?

We are optimistic about AI’s potential, but we’re also realistic. Some roles will disappear. Not every new job will be great. The transition will be uneven. But when you look at the data and the history of major breakthroughs, there are reasons to believe that AI can expand the job market. And regardless of how things unfold, those who learn AI early will benefit the most.

AI will change the tools we use, but not the value of human judgment, creativity, or empathy. Those will remain at the center of any future worth building, as will we.
