How To Use The Calculator

1. Pick Paths to Compare

The comparison defaults to full-time vs. part-time AI master’s degrees. Change these to compare other credentials.

2. Enter Your Situation

Select your salary, age, background, and target AI role. Your results will update instantly.

3. Fine-tune Your Estimate

Know your exact tuition, have a loan, employer reimbursement, or a specific salary in mind? Use this panel to adjust.

Methodology & Sources

Every number in the AI education ROI calculator comes from somewhere. Here’s the data behind it, the assumptions we made, and the limitations of this tool.

AI Target Role Salaries

Full-time vs. Part-time AI Master’s

Same credential and salary bump. Full-time assumes no income during the 1.5-2 year program. Part-time defaults to 80% of your salary during the 2–3 year program, reflecting that students often work reduced hours while enrolled. Income and tuition are adjustable in the Fine-tune panel.

AI Education Path Assumptions

Salary bumps are calibrated from the BLS Current Population Survey master’s premium for computer occupations (~16%) and adjusted for the AI wage premium (Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2025 and our job board analysis).

AI Education PathSalary BumpAvg. TuitionDurationIncome During Program
AI Master’s (full-time)+21%$60,0001.5 to 2 yearsNone

Professional AI Certifications+6%$2,0003-12 monthsFull Salary

Salary Growth

The model applies 5% annual growth to all AI roles for the first 10 years post-graduation, tapering to 3.5% long-run (BLS Employment Cost Index). This reflects BLS projections for AI and data science roles as well as growth rate calculations from LinkedIn’s 2026 Jobs on the Rise report.

The baseline (stay in current role) grows at 3.5% annually, so you’re always measured against a rising salary, not a frozen starting point.

Realization Rates

The probability of landing your target role after completing an AI degree or certificate program. Rates vary by your background and the credential you select – AI master’s degrees have a higher realization rate than professional certifications, particularly for students with non-technical backgrounds targeting technical roles. Rates are based on independent market research and reviewed by our Editorial Advisory Board.

Each range shows certifications (lower end) to master’s degree (upper end).

Target RoleSoftware/TechSTEM/QuantNon-Technical
AI Product Manager82-85%78-80%70-75%
AI/ML Engineer82-95%65-80%45-55%
AI Solutions Architect80-90%68-78%50-60%
AI Researcher70-95%58-80%32-50%
Data Scientist82-90%72-85%50-60%

How this works: For example, if your realization rate is 75%, the model calculates your expected earnings as 75% of the target salary outcome plus 25% of your current salary trajectory. A higher credential (master’s vs. certifications) and stronger background (software/tech vs. non-technical) both push your rate toward the upper end of the range.

Other ROI Calculator Defaults

Retirement Age: 67 (Social Security full retirement age for anyone born in 1960 or later). Editable in the Fine-tune panel.
Employer Reimbursement: Defaults to 0%. Reduces net tuition cost and moves up the break-even date. Editable in the Fine-tune panel.
Target Role Salary: Defaults to the national median for each role. If you have a specific offer or salary expectation, adjust it in the Fine-tune panel.
Gross Earnings: Figures are shown in gross, nominal dollars. Higher-earning paths will face higher marginal tax rates, so real after-tax gaps are somewhat smaller than shown. Lifetime figures aren’t discounted for inflation – a dollar earned in year 30 is worth less than one earned today.

Limitations of the Tool

Completion Risk: About 30% of part-time students don’t finish the program. The model assumes completion.
Geography: The model uses national medians. AI pay in tech hubs like NYC, Seattle, and the Bay Area runs substantially higher.
Equity Compensation: The model looks at base salary only. Stock and equity are not included.
Certification Study Time: The AI certifications path doesn’t model the 10-20 hours/week of self-study typically required on top of your job.
Program Quality: The model applies the same salary bump to all AI programs of each type. Outcomes vary by program reputation, instructor quality, employer relationships, location, and more. Use our AI program rankings to compare programs in-depth.
Selection Bias: Salary premiums reflect people who pursue and complete AI degrees and certificates – a motivated self-selected group. I.e., some of the earnings gap reflects the person more than the credential.
